The Tree of Life- War Horse
Thus far: The Descendants and The Help were terrible; Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close was good but not Oscar-worthy; Midnight in Paris was delightful. I’m seeing Hugo today and expecting it to be great. I’m also determined to see A Separation if it kills me because it looks so, so good.
Edit, 4pm 29 Jan 12: Hugo, as minimallyeschew hinted, was a delightful, enchanting, fantastic little thing and perhaps my favorite of the year. All #OscarAngst officially relieved.
Edit, 6pm 5 Feb 12: The Artist was pure heaven, and one of my favorite movies of all time. #OscarAngst is completely gone.
Edit, 10:30pm 23 Feb 12: I’ve now seen all the Oscar-nominated movies I’m going to get to see before the awards. Tonight I saw The Tree of Life, which despite being incredibly beautiful and thematically brilliant, was too inaccessible and convoluted for me to think it even remotely worthy of being considered for this award. Between my pretension and its own lies a happy medium, I’m sure, but I’m not seeing it. :) I also got to see A Separation, which is probably my favorite film of the year. What can I say? I’m a sucker for screenplays.
My Oscar picks below the jump…
Best Picture: Hugo (The Artist being an extremely close second, and A Separation if it were a choice being my #1)
Lead Actress: Rooney Mara, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Lead Actor: Jean Dujardin, The Artist
Supporting Actress: Jessica Chastain, The Help (she, by the way, is divine)
Supporting Actor: Max von Sydow, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (what I really want: Corey Stoll, Midnight in Paris, because Hemingway…)
Animated Feature Film: n/a
Cinematography (don’t make me choose!): Emmanuel Lubezki, The Tree of Life (followed really closely by Jeff Cronenweth, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Robert Richardson, Hugo)
Art Direction: Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo, Hugo
Costume Design: Sandy Powell, Hugo
Directing: Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life (it was a tour de force regardless of my opinion; but personally I’d pick David Fincher, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo)
Documentary/Documentary Short: n/a
Film Editing: Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Foreign Language Film: A Separation (Iran), directed by Asghar Farhadi
Makeup: Nick Dudman, Amanda Knight, and Lisa Tomblin, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Music (Original Score): Ludovic Bource, The Artist (although I think Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross should pretty much always win this award)
Music (Original Song): n/a (should have been the redux of ‘The Immigrant Song’ in Dragon Tattoo because of Reasons…and no I don’t care that a cover is inherently not original…)
Animated Short/Live Action Short: n/a
All sound editing and sound mixing awards for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That movie was aurally perfect.
Visual Effects: Tim Burke, David Vickery, Greg Butler, and John Richardson, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Adapted Screenplay: John Logan, Hugo
Original Screenplay: Asghar Farhadi, A Separation (followed closely by Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris)
